MONTAGUE, P.E.I. — John Likely’s rink started defence of its P.E.I. Tankard title with a 12-3 victory over Keith Nabuurs’ rink Wednesday at the Montague Curling Rink.

Leading 3-1, Likely stole four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a commanding 11-1 advantage. Nabuurs scored singles the next two ends before Likely counted one in the ninth to end the contest.

The winning team from the Cornwall Curling Club includes lead Jake Flemming, second Steve Burgess and third Ryan Abraham. They will play the Jamie Newson-skipped squad from the Silver Fox Curling Club at 2 p.m. in the A quarter-final of the 11-team triple-knockout competition.

In other opening draw games, Eddie MacKenzie defeated Philip MacDonald 7-4 in nine ends, Rod MacDonald defeated Mitchell Schut 8-7 while Steve vanOuwerkerk scored one in the 10th to defeat Philip Gorveatt 8-7.

The 2 p.m. draws will also see MacKenzie play Darren Higgins and Rod MacDonald meet Bryan Cochrane.

The first women’s draw will see Tammy Dewar and Melissa Morrow play in the five-team competition.
