Schools are closed

Due to the winter storm warning and declining travel conditions expected for today, schools are closed.

  • All classes in the Public Schools Branch are cancelled
  • All classes in the French Language School Board are cancelled
  • Grace Christian School is closed
  • Montessori School of Charlottetown is closed
  • UPEI is closed for the day
  • Holland College is closed for the day
  • Collège de l'Île is closed for the day

Weather – Up to 15 cm of snow

It will be a snowy day across the province today with up to 15 centimetres of snow expected.

Environment Canada indicates snow will begin this morning and bring 10 to 15 cm to the central and eastern parts of the Island with wind gusting to 50 km/h. Today’s high is -2 C, but with the wind chill it will feel like -13 C this morning and -8 C this afternoon.

Snow this evening with a risk of snow squalls overnight. There will be blowing snow over exposed areas overnight amounting to two to four centimetres with wind gusting to 60 km/h near midnight. Tonight’s low is -6 C, but with the wind chill it will feel like -9 C this evening and -15 C overnight.

Special weather statement:

Snow expected today and tonight.

  • Locations: central and eastern Prince Edward Island.
  • Time span: today and persisting overnight.
  • Remarks: A developing storm will give significant snowfall to central and eastern parts of the province. Snow will develop this morning and persist tonight. Current indications suggest that total snowfall amounts near 15 cm are likely. Additionally, strong northerly winds will develop giving reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Higher than normal water levels are expected at high tide this afternoon over the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

  • Wind conditions today may result in restrictions of traffic on the Confederation Bridge beginning at about 10 p.m until about 10 p.m. tomorrow.

Arrival cancellations:

  • Air Canada flight 7750 scheduled to arrive from Halifax at 9:05 a.m. has been cancelled.
  • Air Canada flight 1706 scheduled to arrive from Toronto at 11:15 a.m. has been cancelled.

Departure cancellations:

  • Air Canada flight 7751 scheduled to depart for Halifax at 9:20 a.m. has been cancelled.
  • Air Canada flight 1707 scheduled to depart for Toronto at 12:05 p.m. has been cancelled.

Air Canada travel advisory:

  • Airport: Charlottetown (YYG) (Charlottetown (YYG))
  • Event: Flights may be impacted by forecasted snow.
  • When: All day, Jan. 8
  • What to do: Air Canada has revised its ticketing policy to make it easier for customers travelling on an affected flight to make changes to their booking without penalty, space permitting.

If a customer's flight is affected, they can retrieve your booking to change their flight free of charge. If they have purchased a ticket with Air Canada Vacations, they should contact them directly at 1-800-296-3408.

It is also recommended that travellers check their flight status or call Air Canada's automated flight information system at 1-888-422-7533 before heading to the airport.

Air Canada has also prepared more information on its re-booking policies for anticipated flight delays and cancellations.
